I'm a practice innovation and knowledge lawyer at Paul Hastings in the London office. And I work with our global practice groups, assisting the lawyers with that LegalTech innovation project.
\n
Part 1: The role of Legal Tech\n
\nFor me, LegalTech facilitates the delivery of legal services in different and often better ways. And I'm excited about it for a variety of reasons. I think, firstly, law is actually a very creative profession and LegalTech can really help provide a platform and a forum for law to be even more creative in the delivery of some of the work product that we create as lawyers.
\n
I think law is often about finding solutions to a challenge or a problem. And technology really gives us the toolbox or armory to be able to deliver our legal advice and solutions in new and exciting ways. So PH LegalTech University was an initiative that myself and our MD of practice innovation knowledge, Nikki Shaver put together.
\n
So the objectives of PH LegalTech University were very much to put on the radars of our lawyers, the opportunities open to them and our clients to use legal technology, to work differently, to create different work products. We've thought about some of the mindsets and skill sets that are really important for our lawyers to have when we're starting to work in a digital age. We targeted it initially at the junior lawyers, but they're really coming to us tech savvy already. They're coming into a law firm expecting to deploy technology in the way that they work. So this is very much about sowing a seed of what's possible by giving them access to the variety of LegalTech tools that are out there. How can we use AI in the work that we do? What can we automate documents, processes, and why would we want to do that? So it's very much about putting these tools on their radar to help them associate what they already know about what technology can achieve, but deploying it in a legal context.
\n
Part 2: A better way to deliver legal services\n
\nChange management is a huge part of our job in the practice innovation team at Paul Hastings, LegalTech solutions have the capacity to transform sometimes in small ways and sometimes in mind blowing ways. So the law is being driven by change. But I do see in the projects that we're undertaking, that we are actually also driving change ourselves. And that's really exciting.
\n
And I often think the noise, if you're sat there thinking there's got to be a better way of doing this, or at least a different way of doing this, then inevitably there will be, and technology will help us achieve that better way of doing something. So I think it's just a case of making sure we've put enough on their radar in terms of legal technology options for them to feel like they have enough to associate a pain point with a potential solution, and then come to us to talk about it.
\n
Part 3: The future has arrived\n
\nLegal technology has a very important place in, obviously, the future, but also right now and I think it's not going to be too far into the future when we see a lot of change for the greater good, so people can actually have quicker access to justice.
\n
What I'd like to see is a quicker adoption and acceptance of legal technology solutions, Because that will then match the speed at which technology changes. And that's really important.
\n
Part 4: Industry collaboration to create the future\n
\nSo LawAdvisor’s a really progressive team, when I first saw what they were doing, I was seriously impressed. The idea of providing a central space for legal teams and clients to share and to work collaboratively together is fantastic. They provide a transparent forum where people can come in and just know the status of a transaction, where everybody is, what everybody needs to do.
\n
LawAdvisor had worked with some really interesting organizations when I first met them using discovery sessions to piece together the most important elements for such a collaborative space.\nAnd they really listened to what the participants of those discovery sessions do and also what they need.
\n
So you know that the solutions are visual, they're intuitive to use, and I think most of all they really help everyone working on the matter to deliver optimum results.
","frontmatter":{"date":"May 04, 2019","slug":"/learn/paving-the-way-for-legaltech-adoption","title":"Paving the way for #legaltech adoption","subtitle":"As the Lead Practice Innovation & Knowledge Counsel for Paul Hastings, and armed with 18 years of experience in the industry, Catherine continues to push the boundaries for change, education, and legal technology.
